For over 40 years attack helicopters have had a very significant role on the battlefield. Attack helicopters are designed to support ground troops and to destroy enemy tanks, troops and support vehicles. Russia and the United States are the primary producers of attack helicopters, but some models are made in Europe and Asia. Training as an attack helicopter pilot is challenging and exciting.

  1. History

    • Attack helicopters were first made in 1967. These helicopters were an alteration of the existing UH 1 Huey helicopter and were designated the AH 1 Cobra. Since then, a number of models of helicopters have been made in the United States and other countries. These aircraft have seen combat in nearly every war since Vietnam. Attack helicopters have become more complex through the years and require thoroughly trained and technologically competent pilots.

    Marine Helicopter Training

    • The United States Marines uses attack helicopters. These helicopters are flown to support Marines in combat. Every Marine pilot must go through officer training. After commissioning as a second lieutenant, Marine pilot candidates attend basic and advanced flight schools in Florida. Attack pilot candidates then train in their specific helicopter mastering flight maneuvers and tactics. After this training, they are assigned to their operational units.

    Army Helicopter Training

    • The United States Army uses attack helicopters. Army pilots are warrant officers. Pilot candidates complete basic training and then complete warrant officer training. After commissioning as a warrant officer pilot, candidates are trained in basic helicopter maneuvers in Alabama. Attack helicopter pilot candidates then complete their attack helicopter training and are assigned to operational units.

    Considerations

    • Flying attack helicopters in either the United States Marines or the United States Army is extremely challenging. All candidates must pass extensive entrance exams and physicals prior to starting the program. The entire length of each program is approximately 1.5 years and consists of nonstop academic and flight training. The rewards of this training are great, however. Attack helicopter pilots are extremely respected members of the most effective combat forces in the world. These pilots fly the best equipment that is maintained in an excellent manner. Additionally, at the end of their service commitment, attack helicopter pilots can use their piloting skills in the civilian community.

    Benefits

    • Army and Marine attack helicopter pilots are very well-paid. They receive both their basic military pay and flight pay throughout their flying careers. Additionally, all military members receive 30 days of vacation annually and have fully paid medical benefits and retirement benefits. Military members are also eligible for education benefits allowing them to pursue educational opportunities both during and after their military careers.

    Warnings

    • Flying attack helicopters has an element of danger. Every year several attack helicopters crash due to accidents. In wartime, attack helicopters are on the front line, or go behind enemy lines. This is inherently dangerous. Attack helicopter pilots also incur considerable family separation. Attack helicopters are needed close to dangerous hot spots and pilots spend a significant amount of time during their careers outside the country and away from family.
