Stolen Car Facts

When you buy a vehicle, the last thing you worry about is having that vehicle stolen. The truth is that many vehicles on the "hot" list are in demand by thieves because their parts are so valuable. The model years of the most-stolen vehicles range from 1988 to 2003 and the models are not all sporty.

  1. Older Cars

    • The hottest cars stolen are older models such as 1995 Honda Civic, 1991 Nissan Sentra and Honda Accord, 1988 Toyota Pickup, 1989 Toyota Camry, 1994 Dodge Caravan and Chevy Full size C/K 1500 Pickup and the 1990 Acura Integra. Other models are the 2003 Dodge Ram Pickup and the1997 Ford F150 Series. These cars are all highly sought after by thieves for their parts.

    Insurance

    • If you own one of the cars on the list, your insurance premium could be higher than if you owned a car that is not popular with thieves. Insurance rates are often determined by the statistics for high theft risks for the vehicle. Discounts are offered for vehicles that utilize anti-theft devices.

    Warning Devices

    • You can get an insurance discount if you own a vehicle on the hot car list by installing warning devices, such as alarm systems, brake locks, tire locks and wheel locks. Having decals in the window of the car will also deter theft. Laminated glass and window etching will deter theft and provide a discount on insurance.

    Disabling Devices

    • Use disabling devices, such as a kill switch, fuse cut off or a smart key, to deter theft. The fuel, ignition and started disabling devices will deter theft and allow discounts on insurance rates.

    Tracking Hardware

    • Use a tracking device on your vehicle. If the vehicle is stolen, the monitoring company or the police station can track it. Using OnStar is just one idea for tracking a vehicle's location after it has been stolen. GPS tracking devices will work well if you do not have OnStar monitoring.
