Influences That Contribute to the Physical Development in Early Childhood

Many things can influence the way a child develops. Understanding these factors can help parents provide their children with the right influences so that they might develop correctly and on time.

  1. Time Frame

    • While many things influence child development and physical development, the time frame of development varies from child to child. Some children will develop slower than others, and some will develop much more quickly. Between the ages of newborn and 3 years, developmental milestones might differ drastically between children.

    Types

    • A primary influence on a child's development is diet. Exercise is another important element. A child who is able to stretch his muscles and practice movement is going to develop much more quickly than a child who is not able to do that. Next, a child needs to see parents and siblings using those muscles. Finally, a child needs scaffolding--help from an adult, to get from where they are to where he needs to be.

    Effects

    • A child who has the right diet, who has room to practice and a chance to explore, who sees adults and others that are developmentally right, and who has the right scaffolding or help, is going to develop much more quickly and become much more stronger than a child who does not have those things.

    Significance

    • Giving a child the influences that he needs to have the correct physical development is an extremely important way of making sure that the child develops correctly. If those things aren't given, the child will not be on track when it comes to physical development.

    Misconceptions

    • Some children have developmental delays, and when this happens, parents feel that they have done something wrong. If a child is not developing on schedule, a parent should contact a doctor to have the child evaluated. Don't just assume that the child isn't getting everything that they need or that they are developing slower than other children.
