What Herbs Are Good for Arthritis?

Arthritis is a very common ailment. If you have arthritis, you will have pain and stiffness in your joints. There are many kinds of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, infectious arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing sodalities. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are the most common and debilitating types of arthritis. There are numerous prescription medications for arthritis but there are also natural herbal treatments available, as well.

  1. Devil's Claw

    • This African herb is called devil's claw because of the shape of its large fruit, which resembles a clawlike hand. Devil's claw can be used as an arthritic pain reliever and can improve mobility and the use of the affected joint, which further enhances healing. This herb is somewhat new to the United States but has been used for a long time in Europe and Africa.

    Ginger

    • Ginger can be used to treat inflammation and pain caused by arthritis. It has resulted in substantial relief and its use has not shown to have any side effects. Ginger can be taken for the relief of arthritis for a substantial period of time.

    Feverfew

    • Feverfew has been found to relieve arthritis because of its anti-inflammatory effects. This herb can increase blood flow and can help the body in its healing efforts. Feverfew can be considered a natural aspirin and has the ability to lower the levels of prostaglandins, which are hormonelike chemicals that are made in the body and are thought to cause inflammation if formed in excess. Feverfew can also be used for the prevention of migraines.

    Turmeric

    • Turmeric is a very ancient herb that is one of the oldest natural anti-inflammatory drugs used for arthritis and other diseases and conditions. It has the ability to relieve arthritic symptoms. When taking a dose of 1,200 mg a day for five to six weeks, significant improvement in arthritis symptoms can occur. Turmeric can improve morning stiffness and physical endurance.

    Nettle Leaves

    • Nettle leaves are very beneficial in reducing the swelling in the affected joints. Nettle leaves have anti-inflammatory properties. The leaves of nettle contain a nutrient called boron, which is often recommended for the treatment of arthritis. One can eat nettle leaves raw or make them into a tea.

    Cinnamon

    • Cinnamon is an herb that can help treat the symptoms of arthritis. It is good for increasing blood flow and can also remove blockages and deposits that can cause arthritic pain. Cinnamon is also good for improving the function of the liver and spleen. Cinnamon can be eaten in food as a spice, drank as a tea, or taken in supplement form.
