The area where the Best Western Pierre was located was rebuilt as the Gallery Plaza, an upscale shopping area, in late 2007. As part of this renovation, the hotel itself underwent a $10 million upgrade, turning it from a budget hotel into a luxury hotel under the flag of Doubletree by Hilton.

The Doubletree by Hilton San Juan is in the Santurce District, named for an area in Bilbao, Spain. It sits at the entrance of Condado, the tourist district, which offers shopping, restaurants and night clubs. The hotel is within walking distance of Puerto Rico's white sand beaches and close to the city' financial district and Convention Center.

The Doubletree by Hilton San Juan has been rated a AAA Four Diamond hotel, which is twice the rating it previously had as a Best Western. The hotel features only guest rooms, no suites, but they are all large and well-appointed, featuring desks and work areas in addition to the other comforts you would expect. King- and queen-size beds are available and all rooms are nonsmoking. The hotels redesign as part of the Gallery Plaza features an open floor plan, warm, modern decor, and a private courtyard with a tropical pool.

Each room features coffee service designed by Wolfgang Puck, in addition to free high-speed Internet access, an ergonomic work area and a flat screen television with premium cable. The hotel's facilities include extensive business and secretarial services on site, as well as a fitness center, laundry, and a spa. The hotel features several restaurants, including Silk, which offers Asian cuisine, including sushi, Michael's Bistro for breakfast and dinner, and Alquima, a wine and tapas bar that features live music.
