What Is the Meaning of Research Analyst?

A research analyst is a person employed in marketing research who studies data procured from customer surveys. A research analyst can go by many titles such as marketing analyst, marketing research analyst or market analyst. This profession usually requires a degree because the job calls for someone who possesses cognitive and computer skills. A research analyst also must be able to present research findings to other managers.

  1. Why Reseach Analysts Are Needed

    • Research analysts are involved in collecting and analyzing data for marketing research studies. These studies can vary from more qualitative research such as focus groups to more comprehensive quantitative research. The quantitative studies involve higher sample sizes and more data. Both types of research are equally important for companies. Research analysts normally write reports highlighting key findings from each study. The information is then used for developing marketing strategies.

The term research analyst can be a bit ambiguous. It is also used in the financial industry.

Educational Requirements For A Research Analyst Position

    • Most research analysts have college degrees. They typically earn business degrees in marketing, or even an MBA. In addition to taking basic college credits, they typically focus on marketing, marketing research, statistics and database management courses. Marketing research analysts often take computer classes. Jobs in this field require the ability to work with various software packages.

Research analysts usually keep abreast of the latest research techniques by attending seminars or joining professional organizations.

The Hierarchy Of A Marketing Research Department

    • Most research analysts jobs are entry-level positions in a company. This is not to say that research analysts do not need experience. Companies will always prefer to hire applicants with a few years of experience. But a research analyst position is usually a lower-level management position. They typically do not manage people and usually report to a marketing research manager or a marketing manager. And their manager usually reports to a director of research or marketing.

    The Research Analyst Job

    • Research analysts usually handle a dozen or more studies simultaneously. They may have a focus group transpiring in one city and customer service research going on in several others. Some surveys may be at the initial stages, while others are at the report-writing stage. A research analyst needs to have excellent organizational and time management skills.

Outlook For The Field Of Research Analysis

    • Companies will always need to know how customers view their products, as well as how to get a leg up on the competition. Because of this, the job market is favorable for the field of research analysis. For example, competition is becoming more intense in the airline and automobile industries, especially after the retrenchment that occurred in the few years leading to 2009. Keeping tabs on the latest trends as well as fickle consumers ensures a career for a research analyst.
