Cat Urinary Syndrome Treatment

Cat Urinary Syndrome Treatment thumbnail
Cats can suffer from an inflammation of their lower urinary tract.

Cat urinary syndrome is properly known as feline lower urinary tract disease, and at one point was known as feline urological syndrome. Essentially, this condition is an inflammation of the bladder, and it can cause great discomfort for your cat. Knowing more about the treatment for cat urinary syndrome can help you take action.

  1. Significance

    • Feline lower urinary tract disease, also known as FLUTD, is not a disease itself. Instead, it refers to the symptoms that are caused by an inflammation, irritation or blockage of the cat's lower urinary tract. The lower urinary tract includes the urethra and the bladder.

    Causes

    • Before treatment can begin on cat urinary syndrome, the cause of the symptoms needs to be identified. A blocked urethra stemming from pus or crystals could be the culprit, as could high acidity in the urine. Bacteria cystitis and urethritis are both common inflammations of the urethra. Stress and a diet consisting mostly of dry food can also cause FLUTD.

    Types

    • There are several types of treatment for FLUTD. Increased consumption of fluids can get rid of this issue, and prescription medication can take care of inflammation. If the issue is caused by a blocked urethra, however, surgical measures may be required.

    Warning

    • If your cat is showing signs of blockage as a result of FLUTD, take it to the veterinarian right away. Blockages can be fatal to your cat unless treatment happens very quickly.

    Prevention

    • Once FLUTD has happened once, it is likely that it will strike your cat again. After your cat has undergone treatment, it will need to have a urine test every six months thereafter to make sure that the issue does not return. A clean litter pan, a diet of wet food and increased water consumption can help your cat avoid this issue in the future.
