The 1990 Ford Mustang GT was the 26th incarnation of the storied sports car that was responsible for the pony car craze. The 1990 model year was right in the middle of the fox body Mustang era, one that many Mustang fans were happy to see end. The GT trim model featured a powerful eight-cylinder engine and sportier handling and transmission options than the basic trim levels.

  1. The Engine

    • The 1990 Ford Mustang GT came with a powerful five-liter, eight-cylinder engine. This engine produced 225 horsepower and 300 foot pounds of torque, though there is some claim that these numbers are underreported by Ford. Max horsepower is available at 4200 rpm and max torque comes in 1,000 rpm lower at 3,200. The engine has electronically controlled fuel injection. It features a 16 valves makeup, two per cylinder.

    The Transmission

    • The Mustang GT came with two transmission options in 1990, either the standard 5-speed manual or the optional four-speed automatic with overdrive. The 1990 was the last year of the basic AOD automatic transmission. AOD stands for automatic overdrive. After 1990 they switched to a more electronically controlled model, called the AODE. The 5-speed is the standard T-5 transmission found in most Ford cars at that time. However, the third gear ratio was lowered and the gears and synchros were strengthened in the GT models.

    The Handling

    • The 1990 Mustang GT featured large disc brakes on both front and rear wheels. It also had progressive rate springs, front and rear anti-sway bars, gas-cushioned struts and 15x7 inch wheels. All this adds up to a 41.2 foot-turning circle. It moves through the 700-foot slalom at 63 miles an hour and pulls .8 Gs on the 60 foot skidpad. The car also has a braking distance from 60 miles an hour to zero of 168 feet.

    The Interior

    • The interior features a front head room of 37 inches, leg room of 42 inches and front shoulder and hip room of 55 inches. The rear head room is 35 inches and rear leg room is only 30 inches. Hip room shrinks to 47 inches in the rear, while shoulder room remains roughly the same at 54 inches. The interior storage capacity is 12.2 cubic feet. Leather seating and sounds system were optional from the dealership. As well, air conditioning was not standard, nor were power locks or windows.

    Performance

    • The 1990 Mustang GT was an acceleration monster. It went zero to 60 in 6.4 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in a very fast 14.9 seconds. The quarter-mile trap speed clocks in at 93 miles and hour. The car has a top speed of 148 miles an hour and makes it 100 miles an hour in 18.8 seconds On stock tires the slalom is recorded at 63 miles and hour and the mustang manages to make .8 Gs on 150 foot skidpad, which is tighter than normal.
