Attractions
-
The Pismo Beach Pier and Promenade, originally built in 1881 and then rebuilt again in 1924, stretches 1,370 feet with multiple fishing decks and fish-cleaning stations. Campers can take a leisurely walk to the pier for clamming opportunities, surf watching or relaxing. Bait and tackles supplies can also be purchased there. Some of common catches of the day include surfperch, jacksmelt, Pacific mackerel, jack mackerel, kingfish, sandfish, starry flounder and halibut. The 60-acre regional beach also includes sand volleyball courts and a children's play area.
Monarch Butterfly Grove
-
The Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is the largest in the state. Located in the North Pismo State Beach campgrounds, the Monarch Butterfly Grove, home to thousands of black-and-orange monarch butterflies, attracts numerous campers while they hike the many surrounding trails. The monarch butterflies flock to the grove between late October and February in order to avoid the cold winters of the north. It is California's largest monarch grove, averaging 25,000 butterflies as of 2010.
The Docent Trailer, a mobile information center, offers interpretive programs for its many visitors during the season. The trailer provides educational information regarding the monarchs migration, life cycle, eating patterns and natural habitat. Volunteers working out of the trailer offer daily informational walks between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
