Problems with Registry Mechanic
Registry Mechanic, developed by PC Tools Software, is a utility program that corrects and maintains the integrity of registry keys in Windows. Each time you install a Windows program, a key is developed in what is called the system registry. The Windows registry contains information about the program, where it is located on the system and how it is accessed.

Upgrade Problems
-
Registry Mechanic upgrades are based on the Windows operating system which contains the information for all software programs in the Windows registry. When upgrading to a new version of Registry Mechanic, you have to ensure that you do not have firewall programs running or the firewall will read the download as a virus and stop the download. There are Registry Mechanic programs available on the Internet which are not authorized by the company, so make sure you buy a licensed copy.
Using Windows System Restore
-
There are times when the Registry Mechanic program will eliminate a registry entry that is not complete but is functional to an existing program on the system. Before initializing Registry Mechanic, you should always back up your registry with the Windows "regedit" command or back up the entire system with the Windows System Restore program.

Problems with Windows Vista
-
Registry Mechanic can run on a Windows Vista 32-bit platform but not efficiently. The program was designed for Windows XP with the Vista operating system not being considered as a viable system platform for the product. Registry Mechanic program modules in Vista will cause a Windows error concerning how much memory to allocate to the registry program, thereby causing a system halt or freeze. PC Tools plans to fix incompatibilities with Vista in the release 9 upgrade.
Registry Keys Affected by Viruses
-
When viruses attack a system, they can place false keys inside of the registry that "move" to another registry key when detected. Registry Mechanic can detect and flag these faulty keys, but in many instances has a hard time deleting the keys. A virus software package should be initialized after Registry Mechanic flags the item. Virus software can also detect a faulty key or program and remove it from the system.
Conflict with Software Applications
-
Registry Mechanic can report false registry problems while software applications are open and firewalls are active on the system. To avoid this problem, all Windows applications should be closed and firewalls to the Internet disabled. Always exit all software applications when running utility programs which remove viruses and perform computer maintenance.
Lack of Documentation for Manual Repair of Registry Keys
-
Registry Mechanic has automated routines that check your system registry for errors. If you want to manually correct your system registry, there is a lack of documentation and instruction for doing so. Buying a book on registry keys will provide the insight for using Registry Mechanic in manual mode to correct the system registry.
