Age of Mythology Vista Patch

There are patches for the PC game "Age of Mythology."

"Age of Mythology" is one of a series of fantasy strategy games produced by Ensemble Studios. Problems in the game were discovered by players after its public release. They were addressed through a series of patches that are available as free downloads. Patches are operating-system specific, so a Vista computer requires a Windows-specific patch.

Vista Compatibility

Windows Vista was designed with the intent of having backwards compatibility with applications installed and executed on a previous Windows operating system. Unfortunately, not all applications are compatible with Vista, and the configuration of your Vista installation will effect which older applications it can run. For this reason, a simple installation and execution of "Age of Mythology" could prove successful for you, but there is a chance further work will be required.

Compatibility Mode

Compatibility Mode is a function of Windows Vista that allows you to increase the likelihood of an older application running on your Vista system. It alters configurations of the computer while the application is in use to more closely match previous iterations of Windows. To turn on compatibility mode for "Age of Mythology," right click on the game's executable file and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu. Click on the Compatibility tab, then click the box next to the prompt to enable a drop-down menu. Select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" from the menu. This will alter your system to an XP configuration when "Age of Mythology" is run.

What the Patches Repair

The patches will fix graphic generation problems. Most notably, the patch will make the "Fog of War" work properly. The patch should also fix severe cases that cause black screens or block the game from launching at all.

Installation

Most of the "Age of Mythology" patches are self-executing. That means all you have to do after downloading the patch is run the application and it will automatically alter the target files.

Patch updates

The version 1.02 and version 1.04 patches of "Age of Mythology" were released years apart, so new patches could come at any time. Microsoft hosts a support page (see resources) that includes a link to the most recent "Age of Mythology" patches.
