Key Logger Virus Information
Key logger viruses are computer software applications used to track various pieces of information on specific computers. These small applications are almost undetectable if the user is not looking for them. Someone looking to harvest passwords or account information can install key loggers onto any number of computers to gather needed information for identity theft. Understanding their function and how to locate them on a computer will help keep this virus from causing serious damage to personal information.

Identification
-
Key loggers are small applications that can infect any computer. This virus is commonly located on social networking and file sharing sites. Email attachments can also hold key logger viruses. Once on the computer, this virus can allow anyone access to personal information if they know how to get the information from the key logger virus. Key logger viruses can easily be identified by the file extension within a file such as .exe or .app.
Function
-
Key logger viruses collect information by recording keystrokes made by users of individual computers. These viruses can capture passwords and account numbers to personal information and web sites. Key logger viruses send the recorded information via the Internet to another computer that is accessed by the attacker.

Types
-
There are two types of key loggers, software and hardware. Key logger software can be installed in a system by malware or shareware from other computers; direct access to the target computer is not required for this type of the virus to infect the computer. Key logger hardware can also be installed on a computer. Hardware requires direct access for the attack to occur. Key logger viruses mainly travel via Internet connections, although it can also be manually installed on public computers using compact discs or flash drives.
Removal
-
Most virus detection software will find and remove key loggers. Run the anti-virus software on a regular schedule to catch all key loggers that might come onto the computer. Another method to remove key loggers is to go into the computer registry and manually remove the application; this method requires knowledge of registry repair and advanced software knowledge. Change passwords on the infected computer once the virus has been removed.
Prevention
-
To prevent this type of virus from infecting a computer, use a virus scanner on a scheduled basis. Install and update two different spyware removal tools on the computer. Lock computers that remain in public areas or require passwords to gain access.
