Airline Safety Culture
-
The airline takes responsibility for passenger safety by implementing certain rules and regulations, making sure that all pilots and airplane staff are trained and certified and that comprehensive checklists and inspection are employed before flight departure. United Airlines has created a resource program called Command Leadership Resource, which promotes efficient decision-making through teamwork. Prior to every flight, pilots are required to meet with flight attendants to review special safety procedures.
Flight Mechanics Safety
-
United Airline mechanics are trained and certified in airplane inspection protocols. The Safety Management System promotes internal oversight through a non-punitive hazard reporting system and safety education, monitors flight systems with proactive internal audits, and identifies and responds to safety risks. The United Airlines work with the Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Defense and audit departments such as ISO 9000 and IATA Operational Safety Audit. These departments review audits to ensure safety requirements of United Airline's fleets and operations.

Pilot Training and Safety
-
United Airline pilots must undergo a custom training every nine months to improve flight experience safety. According to United Airline Safety "pilots use state-of-the-art flight simulators that recreate everything from adverse weather, to airport-specific conditions to complex emergencies." Pilots are required to receive computer-based training and classroom instruction on passenger safety and security systems. One training in particular, OSHA, is a course designed to reinforce ground personnel safety. Employees will receive an OSHA training card upon course completion to recognize their accomplishment and commitment to safety.
Flight Attendants and Safety
-
United Airline flight attendants are required to undergo training and certification in medical emergencies such as administering CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) and security response. Flight attendants must know how to operate safety systems such as oxygen masks, evacuation doors, fire extinguishers and life rafts. Annual safety training is required so that flight attendants stay current on safety regulations and systems.
Passenger Safety
-
Pilot and flight attendants are required to verbally educate passengers on safety guidelines and systems prior to departure. Safety cards are placed in seat backs for all passengers to have access to safety instructions and guidelines at all times. United Airlines requires that unaccompanied minors bring a written statement from the child's parents or legal guardians stating who will be picking up the child from the airport. For safety reasons, United Airlines will save this information including names, addresses and contact information of the responsible adult escorting child to and from the airport. Adults are required to present valid photo identification to ensure that children are being released to the proper person(s).
