An Internet car salesman sells new and used vehicles to consumers who contact a dealership via the Internet. In smaller dealerships, the Internet car salesman, also known as an Internet sales manager, may be responsible for updating the dealership website and entering the new and used car inventories on websites like AutoTrader.com and Cars.com. Unlike a traditional salesman, who is reliant on walk-in traffic and phone inquiries, an Internet car salesman can be contacted at any time of day or night, and is frequently in touch with his clients after business hours.
The Internet car salesman may have a status and responsibilities similar to a regular, non-Internet salesman. These can include maintaining the lot, cleaning the showroom and working with walk-in traffic on an overflow basis. In some dealerships, the Internet salesman is a managerial position, which requires attendance at management meetings and can include perks like a demo vehicle, often given only to managers.
Many pay plans are used for Internet car salespeople. Unlike floor salespeople, who usually earn a small base salary or advance on future commissions, an Internet sales manager may earn a larger guaranteed salary and be less reliant on commission. This is because Internet sales departments value high volume, rather than high gross profit, on each sale. A salary is also offered because the job may include administrative work or require the employee to be on call 24 hours each day.
Internet sales managers must be good with computers, available at all times of day and night and have the ability to show empathy and close car deals. Many aspiring Internet car salesmen must work on their their selling skills, as many applicants have excellent computer skills but little sales experience.
An Internet car salesman usually has exclusivity over all prospects who contact the dealership via the Internet. As more and more consumers focus their car shopping on the Internet, less are visiting the showroom. By being an effective closer and responding quickly to Internet requests, an Internet sales manager can have a steady source of income from his sales in addition to a base salary.
The education required to become an Internet car salesman varies by dealership. While a floor salesperson can find a job with only a high school diploma, an Internet sales manager may need to rise from the rank of floor salesperson to the Internet job, and a college degree in sales or marketing can increase an applicant's stock. However, each job posting is different, as is each Internet car salesman job being offered.
