An HR generalist manager is someone who runs a company's human resources department. The HR generalist's primary duties consist of recruiting, interviewing, hiring and training employees. Occasionally, HR generalists may handle payroll or oversee the payroll department. They also play a role in making sure employees stay motivated and productive, as well as manage employee benefits and retirement plans.

Jobs for HR generalists are expected to increase by 22 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a higher average than most other occupations. More than 133,000 workers were employed as HR managers in May 2008, the BLS reports.

As of February 2010, HR generalists earned salaries that ranged from $32,000 to nearly $85,000 per year, according to PayScale.com. Higher earnings were based on experience, as well as the industry in which the HR generalist was employed. Also, the BLS reported in May 2008 that HR generalists could earn as much as $107,280.
