A commercial manager is found in situations where a manager is needed to fulfill a wide array of duties, often in constantly changing multinational corporations. These managers are often found engaged in contract negotiation, risk management, project management, financial management, employee management, and marketing management. Commercial managers must have fantastic market awareness, including awareness of international markets. The commercial manager must then be able to translate this market awareness into specific actions that need to be defined for those in the business so that they will be able to carry out specific actions smoothly. Commercial managers must also be aware of how company profit changes how the company as a whole operates. Commercial managers will also be expected to outline how decisions made will affect the long-term operation of the business.

Since commercial managers often set their own hours, they have plenty of flexibility with their scheduling. However, commercial managers have a large number of responsibilities and are held highly accountable for their actions, creating a great deal of stress. Degrees that are useful for commercial managers include economics, marketing, advertising, business management and public relations. Commercial managers must have exceptional communication skills and an ability to persuade a variety of individuals from customers to employees to executives in other businesses. They must have powerfully analytical minds, since they have to process an enormous amount of information and make decisions that can determine the success or failure of the commercial enterprises they manage. They must also have the ability to lead.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual earnings of company and enterprise managers were $113,690 in 2008. Chief executives earned $158,560 in 2008. Commercial managers can also expect performance bonuses and stock options, which helps commercial managers become some of the highest paid managers in business.
