Deck & Railing Materials

Deck & Railing Materials thumbnail
There are many choices in wood deck materials today.

Deck and railing materials have certainly come a long way in recent years. The manufacturing and design of composite materials has given consumers more products to choose from than ever before. Wrought iron is also an option in the design of deck and railing materials. There are also traditional wood deck and railing materials that can be suitable for your projects. The type of deck and railing material that is suitable for most designs will depend upon what feature is most important to you. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Composite material is made from recycled plastics and provides a maintenance-free deck. The composite material comes in different colors. Wrought iron railings are used in many commercial applications as well as large estates. Pressure treated wood deck and railing material is the standard for most homeowners today; the wood is treated with special chemicals that deter pests and slows decomposition.

    Features

    • Composite material comes in a variety of colors and preformed shapes to create nice visual appeal for consumers. Composite decking will not cup, crack or bow like traditional wood decking. Wood decking and railing comes in different spindle and finial shapes that are stainable with any color you wish. Wood decking is the most economical decking and railing material available today. An iron railing will provide a very ornate look and feel to your patio or deck. Iron railing is installed in sections, and most bends and turns are done in the shop prior to installation.

    Benefits

    • The major benefit of composite decking and railing is low or no maintenance. Many composite decking and railing manufacturers offer a 25-year warranty on their products. Composite materials offer no warping, no splinters and no bowing. The benefit of wood material is the ease of use in cutting, bending and fastening for use in decks and patios. Wrought iron makes for a very solid railing that cannot be damaged by rot or pests.

    Disadvantages

    • Composite decking and material is not easily shaped or cut, which makes installation difficult sometimes. Manufacturers make special fasteners for use with composite decking boards, because most nail guns do not work effectively with this material. With pressure treated wood decking and railing materials, be aware of the chemicals used for treatment. These chemicals can cause health problems such as allergies or illness. Wrought iron railing and decking may not be the best choice for families with small children due to the sharp edges and ends.

    Considerations

    • Composite decking material is more expensive than traditional wood decking, which is the most economical choice; however, weigh that advantage against the potential toxicity of the chemicals used to preserve the wood and the maintenance-free quality of composite. Wrought iron can be pricey or not, depending on the complexity of the design and whether you are having the sections custom fabricated. Iron will have to be periodically treated to avoid rust.
