Medications for Dog Hip & Back Problems

Medications for Dog Hip & Back Problems thumbnail
Help protect your dog's joints.

If your dog suffers from hip or back problems, there are medications available that can help relieve his pain and improve his quality of life. Depending on your dog's health, breed and particular medical needs, your vet can prescribe the most effective and appropriate treatment. Each formulation treats different symptoms of skeletal and joint problems, so it's important to understand all of your options.

  1. Diseases

    • Common hip problems in dogs include arthritis and hip dysplasia. Arthritis is a painful condition that occurs when cartilage, which cushions the joints, breaks down. Bones begin to rub against one other, causing discomfort and eventual wearing away of skeletal tissues. Joints also can become swollen and inflamed. Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joints, which cause them be loose and rub unnaturally. This also can cause bone-on-bone contact. As these diseases progress, dogs become lame and more uncomfortable.

    Medications

    • Glucosamine and chondroitin are among two of the most popular choices of medication to treat joint problems. Glucosamine aids in stabilizing joint degeneration and repairing damaged cartilage, while also helping to reduce inflammation. Chondroitin helps maintain the protective fluid around the joints, which is essential for comfortable movement. Prescription medications such as Rimadyl (carprofen) help relieve pain and reduce inflammation, while Adequan helps maintain cartilage and protect against bone-on-bone contact.

    Administration

    • Most skeletal issues are treated with medications that are administered orally. Start with 750 mg of glucosamine per 50 pounds, and 800 mg of chondroitin per 50 pounds. This may be combined in one pill. These neutraceuticals also are available in liquid form to make them easier to swallow. Rimadyl is available in a chewable, beef-flavored tablet. Adequan is injected intramuscularly for the fastest, most effective relief.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of glucosamine and chondroitin include nausea and vomiting. Side effects of Rimadyl are generally mild, such as appetite loss and diarrhea. The most commonly reported side effect of Adequan is pain at the injection site. It's important to monitor your dog for the first signs of ill effects, and seek medical attention for him if it is prolonged or worsens.

    Warnings

    • Glucosamine and chondroitin are over-the-counter medications and are sold under many different brand names. They are not regulated, so the formulas can differ from brand to brand. Be sure to compare labels to determine the purest compounds and the highest amounts of active ingredients. Consider the dosage on each label. One capsule of one brand may equal two capsules of another. Adequan should not be used in dogs with bleeding disorders or renal issues.
