Tramadol Medication for Dogs

It can be difficult for people to determine whether their pet is in pain.

Dogs can experience pain for a variety of reasons. Whatever the cause of pain, some pets may require pain relief. Tramadol is the generic name for Ultram, which is a type of pain reliever used in canines. Tramadol is not recommended for use in dogs that are using a narcotic pain medication, sedatives, anxiety medication or tranquilizers.

Symptoms of Pain

It can be difficult for owners to tell whether their dog is in pain. Symptoms of pain can vary from dog to dog based on the dog's individual temperament as well as its breed, gender, age, size and even the time of day. Some signs of pain in a dog may include excessive grooming of the painful area, lameness of a limb or various changes in behavior such as becoming aggressive or lethargic. Additional symptoms of pain include self-mutilation, drooling, dilated pupils, changes in breathing or heart rate, lack of appetite or restlessness.

Uses

Since tramadol is a type of pain reliever, it can be used for a variety of ailments that may be causing pain in a canine. This medication can be beneficial for dogs who have temporary pain, such as after a surgery. It can also be beneficial for treating chronic pain that may be caused by illnesses or diseases such as arthritis, hip dysplasia or cancer.

Dosages

The dosage for a dog will vary greatly based on many factors, including the cause of pain, the breed, weight and age of the dog. Dosage can vary from 0.45 milligrams to 1.8 milligrams per pound. The frequency of administration will also vary based on the veterinarian's recommendations. Some dogs may require medication every six to 12 hours, while others may only require medication on an "as-needed" basis. If the owner misses a dose, it should be given immediately unless the next scheduled dose is soon. In this case, the dose should be skipped and extra medicine should not be given to make up for the missed dose, as this can cause serious side effects or even death.

Side Effects

As with any medication, side effects can occur. For some dogs, this can mean an upset stomach, constipation, panting or constricted pupils. Tramadol can cause seizures in humans, so it should not be used in dogs that have a history of seizures. When the medication is discontinued, it must be done slowly to prevent symptoms of sudden withdrawal. These symptoms include nausea, anxiety, tremors, chills, anxiety and issues with breathing.

Signs of Overdose
