What Is a Casual Dress Style?
When workplaces or parties request a casual dress style, they are actually looking for something a little fancier than the casual denim shorts, a tank top, or flip-flops. Showing up to work in attire that makes you look like you are headed to the beach could not only be an embarrassing scenario but could also get you written up, or even fired. The problem with casual dress style is that it can mean different things to different people and situations, but there are a few rules of thumb to follow when you are dealing with the work environment.
-
Pants and Skirts
-
Khaki pants and slacks are an acceptable choice for business casual. Khaki pants, slacks, skirts, and khaki skirts are generally acceptable for women. They should never wear anything that is too tight or too short. Capris are generally considered juvenile or beachwear. Skirts should be knee length, and shouldn't have slits. Khakis, Dockers, and corduroys are generally acceptable for men. Stick to solids for the color such as blacks, grays, tans, and browns.
Depending on the field they are in, jeans might be acceptable. Jeans should never be ripped or torn. They should be nice, new-looking, crisp denim, and some accents on them are acceptable. It is a good idea to stay clear of denim until you know your workplace's casual policy.
Shirts
-
Button up shirts are a good choice. As for tops, buttoned-up shirts, blouses, sweaters, polo shirts, and cardigans are all acceptable for women. No cleavage should be showing. Men should stick with button-down or polo shirts. No matter what you choose, the top should be ironed and clean. T-shirts should not be worn, unless they have a collar, but in general try and stay clear of t-shirts.

Shoes
-
Wear professional shoes. Shoes should remain professional. Shoes can make something that is really casual look professional, but they can also make something that is really professional look sloppy. Leather dress shoes are a good choice. Hiking boots and tennis shoes are not appropriate. For men, Oxfords and Loafers are appropriate. For women, heels, or fancy flats are a good choice. Sandals may be acceptable as long as they are fancy looking. Open-toe shoes often aren't allowed to be worn.
Socks
-
Socks should be dark blacks, browns and grays Socks should always be dark and cover the mid-calf when you sit down. Don't wear athletic, white, or ankle socks with business casual attire.
Accessories
-
Ties and pantyhose are not necessary in casual dress style. Jewelry, light makeup, scarves, purses, book bags, and professional hair styles can dress up casual clothing. Pearls and fancy jewelry can make a casual outfit appear more professional.
