Information on a Ratchet Deadlocked

Things aren't so rosy for space-adventurer Ratchet and his robotic pal, Clank. The duo has been taken hostage by Gleeman Vox, and Ratchet has been forced to participate in a gladiatorial style competition known as the DreadZone. So begins "Ratchet: Deadlocked," an action game developed and released for the PlayStation 2.

  1. History

    • "Ratchet Deadlocked" is the fourth game in the "Ratchet and Clank" series, a group of games that revolves around Ratchet, part of the fictional Lombax race and his robot companion, Clank. This is the first game in the series that does not feature Clank as a playable character, instead focusing on Ratchet's imprisonment and time spent as a gladiator. This marked the last PlayStation 2 outing for the series.

    Release

    • Released on October 25, 2005, for the Sony PlayStation 2, "Ratchet: Deadlocked" was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment America. Outside America, the game was released in November of the same year, though it was retitled in Europe as "Ratchet: Gladiator." The next game in the series, "Size Matters," would not be released until 2007 for the PSP.

    Gameplay

    • "Ratchet: Deadlocked" is a 3-D action game in which players control Ratchet as he defeats wave after wave of enemies. Players maneuver Ratchet around closed arenas, taking out enemies with a variety of weapons such as the Mini Turret Launcher, which deployed automatic machine guns onto the field, and the Arbiter, a rocket launcher that could fire up to three rockets at once. Up to four players could participate in the game's offline multiplayer mode, competing in death match competitions using the game's weapons and arenas.

    Online Play

    • Players of "Ratchet: Deadlocked" were able to battle against their friends online in a series of combat-based competitions. Modes included in online multiplayer include Conquest, which revolves around capturing enemy bases, capture the flag, death match and king of the hill. As of March 2010, players can still log onto the Insomniac servers and play "Ratchet: Deadlocked" online.

    Reception

    • As of 2010, the Metacritic score of "Ratchet: Deadlocked" 81 out of 100. The GamePro review states "The graphics are beautiful, the sound effects forceful, and the between-challenge sports anchor schtick light and amusing, but the way these elements mesh forges a rich consistency greater than the sum of its parts." Jeremy Dunham on IGN wrote in his review of the game that "though diehard Ratchet and Clank fans will probably miss the puzzle and platform elements that made the earlier games a more complete experience ... 'Ratchet: Deadlocked' is still a whole hell of a lot of fun."
