An accounting specialist is a broad title for a variety of accounting positions, including bookkeepers, accounting clerks and financial associates. Most accounting specialists have at least an associate degree -- and more often a bachelor's degree -- in accounting or a related field. Accountants are essential in maintaining accurate and compliant company financial records.

General Job Responsibilities

Accounting specialists perform a variety of general administrative and clerical duties related to accounting. Responsibilities include accounts payable and receivable, payroll, daily financial reports, bank reconciliation and annual budgets. Accountants employed by a bank might have additional responsibilities related to loan management, customer accounts and daily reconciliation of funds. Skills helpful in this career path include math, organization, thoroughness, time management and the ability to meet deadlines. Accounting specialists who aspire to more advanced positions might need to pass the Certified Public Accountant exam.
