United States Navy Basic Training

The United States Navy is the branch of the armed forces designated for naval and amphibious warfare. As of Jan 2010, the United States Navy had nearly 460,000 personnel committed to active duty or the Navy Reserve. Each recruit is required to attend basic training to transition from civilian to sailor.

  1. Features

    • Enlisted personnel of the United States Navy initially report to the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois for basic training, also known as Boot Camp. These recruits do eight weeks of mental and physical training before graduation. Specific qualifications must be met before a recruit can proceed to the following week.

    Qualifications

    • Physical training qualifications include the completion of two physical training tests. These tests consist of sit-reaches, curl-ups, push-ups, and a 1 1/2 mile run. The recruit is also required to qualify in weapons training and participate in a live fire simulation.

    Classroom Tests

    • Classroom studies include courses in customs and courtesies, financial management, shipboard communication, and basic seamanship. Each recruit is required to pass tests on the associated lessons. The third week of training involves boarding a land-bound training ship where each recruit will receive hands-on training in first aid techniques, ship nomenclature classification and flag signaling.

    Confidence Tests

    • The recruit is required to complete mandatory qualifications conducted in the swim tank and Confidence Chamber. Swim qualifications include remaining afloat for five minutes and swimming 50 yards. The Confidence Chamber is considered the most challenging qualification in basic training. Recruits are required to enter a chamber filled with tear gas, remove a mask and recite personal information before exiting.

    Graduation

    • The training session is designed to teach each recruit the United States Naval history and Naval core values of honor, courage, and commitment. Graduation in week eight will complete Boot Camp and recognize former recruits as United States Naval Seaman.
