Many people acknowledge loved ones’ birthdays and anniversaries by sending flowers. Floral delivery drivers are responsible for picking up floral arrangements at floral shops and delivering them to customers. These are usually entry-level positions, so workers learn the required skills on the job. Some floral delivery drivers assist florists by putting together floral arrangements as well.

Duties

Floral delivery drivers load customer orders into the delivery van. They inspect floral arrangements for damages, and report any issues to the florist. Floral delivery drivers then bring arrangements to customers’ homes. In some cases, delivery drivers may be required to obtain signatures for proof of receipt. Some floral delivery drivers may also assist in floral shops or warehouses. They help unpack floral freight deliveries and organize flowers in the storeroom. Some may also write up customer orders. Floral delivery drivers are often responsible for the maintenance of the company vehicle as well.

Requirements

Many employers prefer floral delivery drivers who have a high school or GED diploma, but there are no formal education requirements for the position. Floral delivery drivers must have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record. Many companies use a box truck to deliver goods, so floral delivery drivers should have experience with that type of vehicle. Delivery drivers must also be in good physical shape, because they have to load and carry heavy floral arrangements. Floral delivery drivers must have good communication and customer service skills as well. Delivery drivers must have a strong attention to detail, and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Organizational skills are important for the position as well. In addition, floral delivery drivers must be able to work well without supervision.

Working Conditions

Floral delivery drivers spend most of the day driving, though they may also work in florist store rooms or warehouses. The job can be physically demanding because it requires heavy lifting, carrying, walking and bending. Some floral delivery drivers work 40 hour weeks, but weekend hours may be required. Delivery drivers may also work overtime during the holidays or other busy seasons. Some floral delivery drivers may work on a part-time basis.

Salary

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for light or delivery services drivers, including floral delivery drivers, was $28,330, as of May 2009. The highest 10 percent earned more than $51,700, while the lowest 10 percent earned less than $17,370. The middle 50 percent earned between $21,410 and $38,040. Floral delivery drivers may receive tips as well, which can increase their income.

Employment Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment for light or delivery services drivers, including floral delivery drivers, will increase by 4 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is a slower rate than the average for all occupations. Employment in the field is closely tied to economic conditions, since consumers tend to spend less on extras like flowers during a recession.
