Comfortis Flea Treatment

Flea protection used to be obsolete on a wet dog.

Fleas can be dangerous and uncomfortable for a dog. They can also cause discomfort for humans if they begin to attack them. Ridding your dog from fleas is the first step in creating a pest-free home. Comfortis tablets can help with that.

  1. Dangers of Fleas

    • Infections and anemia are the two biggest dangers of a flea infestation. Infections may come from the flea bite itself becoming infected or from the dog cutting itself open while scratching. Irritation can also cause infections of the skin since irritated skin does not heal as well as non-irritated skin. Anemia is a lack of red blood cells in the blood and this is caused by the fleas feasting on the dog's blood. If anemia is left untreated and the fleas are left uncontrolled, death can result. Tapeworms have also been known to be transferred from a flea to a dog via a flea bite.

    Comfortis Treatment

    • Comfortis works by poisoning the flea with a nerve agent that causes spasms and eventual death. This toxin is safe for most dogs and very effective on fleas, resulting in death within half an hour from the time the tablet is administered. Comfortis is a tablet medication that has a beef flavor and lasts approximately 30 days, providing comfort no matter the weather or activity.

    Warnings

    • Although Comfortis is made with a beef flavor that most dogs like, it is actually made with a pork product. If the dog has an allergy to pork, alternative flea medication may be necessary. It is also very important to use only the dosage level specified for your dog's weight. An over dosage may result in illness or serious injury in the dog. Feeding the dog when giving the Comfortis tablet may help to prevent nausea in the dog at the time of administration. Comfortis is only approved for dogs and should not be used to treat flea infestations in humans or cats.

    Side Effects

    • Although rare, some side effects are associated with the use of Comfortis. The most frequent ones are depression or lethargy, incoordination, decreased appetite, diarrhea, trembling and seizures. Other side effects include drooling or nausea after taking the tablet. These can be prevented by using only the recommended dosage and by feeding the dog when dosing it. Use this product only once every 30 days to prevent side effects. If side effects do occur, speak with a veterinarian right away.

    Veterinarian Help

    • The veterinarian is a trained professional who works with you and your dog to provide healthy lifestyle for your dog. The veterinarian can evaluate the lifestyle of the dog and owner and find ways to prevent flea infestation. The veterinarian can also provide information on killing fleas that are in the home or lawn, preventing a re-infestation. The veterinarian can assist with the dosage of Comfortis. If you have concern about adverse side effects the veterinarian can observe the dog to treat any side effects if they should occur.
