Who is it For?

While it doesn't hurt for civilian boaters to read and understand the significance of the U.S. Coast Guard Boat Operations and Training manual, its real intent is to introduce operational commanders, other officers and boat unit personnel, along with Coast Guard Boat Force customers, what the techniques, training requirements and doctrines of the Coast Guard are.

The manual has five parts. Each part has can stand alone with its own table of contents. The parts are Introduction, Operation and Missions, Station Operation, Readiness and Standardization, and Boat Crew Training.

The book is solely a method of preparation and does not include all possibilities. It does not take the place of experience and good judgment, and the safety of others is a priority in all situations.
Civilian Instruction

The Coast Guard is not responsible for training civilians in boat safety even though it creates the laws that guide the states in their regulations. However, the Coast Guard works in cooperation with the U.S. Power Squadrons to give civilians their own version of boat operation and boat training.
