Peridex is one of the drugs used to treat stomatitis---inflammation of the gums, tongue and mouth in dogs. Stomatitis can be caused by periodontal disease or by things caught between the dog's teeth. If treatment is not started, complications could set it. Your veterinarian may recommend a tooth cleaning and removal of the cause of the inflammation, then prescribe an antibiotic such as Peridex.

  1. Name and Uses

    • Peridex is the brand name of chlorhexidine, an antibiotic used to kill bacteria. It is also used to treat swelling, bleeding and redness of inflamed gums (gingivitis). The medication works best after a thorough teeth cleaning. Soak a cotton ball and thoroughly wipe the gums, or use a syringe to rinse the dog's gums with the mouthwash.

    Side Effects

    • The medication might cause teeth staining. If the dog's teeth become stained, the veterinarian can do another cleaning once treatment is completed. If the dog swallows enough of the Peridex, it might exhibit upset stomach or nausea. Allergic symptoms include a rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing.

    Precautions

    • Tell the veterinarian of any other medications your dog might be on, even over the counter supplements. If your dog is pregnant or nursing, alert the vet. This medication might have adverse reactions with other medications. According to Medicinenet.com, it is not known whether Peridex is excreted in the dog's milk.

    Feeding

    • While your dog is undergoing treatment with Peridex, feed it a soft diet such as canned food diluted with water, so that it is mushy. Keep with the semi-liquid diet until otherwise advised by your vet.

    Supplements and Pain Medications

    • Your vet might also prescribe additional pain medication and supplements for your dog. Peridex does not have pain-killing properties. Also, depending on the type of soft food you are feeding, your dog may not receive all needed nutrients---in which case the vet will advise you to give additional vitamins to your dog.
