History
-
LimeWire, the LLC (limited-liability company) which owns LimeWire Basic and LimeWire Pro, was founded in June 2000 by Mark Gorton, a graduate of Yale University with a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard University. The company launched the earliest version of LimeWire just two months later, in August 2000. In September, 2001, LimeWire released the source code for the program as open-source software under a GNU general public license.
Features
-
LimeWire uses the Gnutella and BitTorrent networks to provide peer-to-peer file sharing capability. The software includes advanced filters for file searching, the ability to limit the files you share to only your friends and to define specific file sharing by individual user. Since November 2004, LimeWire has included sharing across firewalls and integrates with iTunes. In 2004, LimeWire removed its LimeShop from the download package and pledged that its software would no longer include bundled spyware or adware. The LimeWire interface also includes an integrated media player that can play nearly any media file downloaded through the software.

LimeWire Pro Versions
-
LimeWire Pro is available in two versions--LimeWire Pro and LimeWire Pro Extended. Both versions include all the features of the LimeWire Basic download but offer faster download speeds and more connections for improved search results. In addition, the Pro version of LimeWire features integrated AVG antivirus software to scan all downloaded files before opening or playing them. LimeWire Pro includes six months of technical support and Pro software upgrades, and LimeWire Pro Extended includes one year of technical support and Pro software upgrades.
Compatibility
-
LimeWire Pro is written in Java so that it can run on all the most popular platforms, including Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Sun. It supports 20 different languages, and the software attempts to connect users that are using the same language versions to make it easier for users to communicate with each other.
Controversy
-
In 2005, the Recording Industry Association of America filed a cease-and-desist order against the owners of LimeWire, demanding that the company immediately stop "enabling and inducing" users to engage in copyright infringement. In response, LimeWire filed a counter claim against the RIAA denying the allegations and alleging that the recording industry engages in anti-competitive practices designed to suppress any form of distribution of music that it does not fully own and control.
Popularity
-
According to LimeWire's press releases, LimeWire is the world's most popular P2P file sharing service, with more than 70 million unique monthly users and up to 5 million users connected at any one moment.
