Power Rake Vs. York Rake

Power and York rakes are not traditional rakes.

Power rakes and York rakes are two variations on the popular yard tool. Power rakes are used for heavy-duty lawn tasks, while York rakes perform more like traditional handheld rakes. Deciding which rake to use depends on your personal preferences and maintenance needs.

Types

A power rake is a rake that looks similar to a lawn mower. The raking mechanism is under the hood of the mower, and a motor powers the rake. This enables the rake to collect materials from the lawn that may be missed by a normal rake. Typically, a power rake is used to de-thatch a lawn, removing dead grass roots and leaves.

A York rake is a brand of rake. York rakes are usually rake attachments for riding lawn mowers, ATVs and other riding equipment. The rake attachments usually do not have as much power behind them as the power rakes.

Benefits

There are benefits to using both power rakes and York rakes. York rakes are ideal for raking large areas of yard. Grass clippings and leaves are collected by the rake and deposited into neat rows that can be picked up later.

The benefit of using a power rake is simply the ability to de-thatch the lawn and to remove other embedded materials from the ground, such as small roots.

Disadvantages

While there are benefits to using a power rake and a York rake, there are also disadvantages. The main disadvantage of a power rake is that it cannot be used as a regular rake. The equipment is expensive and should only be used about once or twice a year.

A York rake has the disadvantage of requiring another, larger piece of equipment to attach to. The York rake cannot perform on its own. The York rake also cannot dig deep under grass and leaves. Another disadvantage of the York rake is the fact that it cannot dispose of the leaves. The leaves still have to be picked up and bagged after use.

Uses

Power rakes are usually used to clear out lawns that have a high level of leaf buildup. They can also be used to de-thatch lawns to prepare the ground for planting new grass or to allow current grass to breathe and expand. A power rake should only be used in the fall when the grass is dead, because it can damage living grass.

York rakes can be used for a variety of tasks. Raking large areas of lawn is one of the most common uses. The York rake can also be used to clear a garden bed or clear light patches of thatch.

Choosing a Rake

Consider your needs before deciding between a power rake and a York rake. If you typically perform heavy-duty landscaping tasks, a power rake may be a wise investment. However, if you don't have much lawn area or already own a compatible vehicle, a York rake could save you both money and effort.
