Pug & Bichon Behavior

Pugs and Bichon Frises are playful, sturdy and affectionate. While they are two very different breeds, their temperaments are similar. Both types are small breeds, although their personalities tend to make them seem like large dogs in small packages. Although all dog breeds have general temperament standards, it should be remembered that each dog has a particular personality. As such, he may not conform to the "standards" for temperament and behavior.

  1. Pug Temperament

As with most small molosser breeds, pugs are courageous, loyal and tenacious. They are sturdy and affectionate with their people, and generally great with children. There are two common "drawbacks" to the breed. They easily become overweight by overindulging in their food and tend to have a problem in sharing their owner's affection.

    Bichon Frise Temperament

The Bichon Frise is cheerful by trait. He loves to be a part of a family atmosphere, and generally does extremely well with children. Often very entertaining, the Bichon is a naturally playful breed, and her playfulness can remain even in her last years. Being playful and eager to please helped the Bichon become a circus dog many years ago.

    Misconceptions and Truths

    • Despite their appearances, both pugs and Bichons are extremely sturdy. That might be surprising in the case of the Bichon, whose curly, white coat lends greatly to the myth that he is a fragile dog. Both breeds make extremely efficient guard dogs. Unlike many small breeds that always like to bark, they are not as prone to bark unless it's necessary. Both types are eager to please their masters, but both need firm hands in doing so. Small dogs tend to be extremely pampered, which often leads them to believe they are "pack leaders" within a family. Because of this, many small dogs start to guard their surroundings, even from their master. That's a primary reason for using a firm, leading hand when training these dogs and when in their company.

    Pug Considerations

    • Pugs are prone to many health problems, including pug dog encephalitis, and difficulties involving breathing, the skin and the eyes. Because their muzzle is flattened and short, pugs tend to breathe making wheezing sounds and snoring. Pug dog encephalitis is a condition that occurs in young pugs, generally 2 to 3 years old. It is an inflammation of the brain that can cause seizures.

Pugs shed frequently, but their grooming is minimal because of the length of their coat. They do not require much exercise, but, as with all dogs, a daily walk is recommended.

    Bichon Frise Considerations

    • Bichons are prone to allergies. Although they are not prone to many life-threatening diseases as many pure-bred dogs are, their allergies can sometimes be severe.

Bichons do not shed, but regular grooming is still required to prevent mats from forming. Because they don't shed, they are often a top pick for people who suffer from dog allergies.
