What Fonts Are Used in mIRC? thumbnail
mIRC is one of the most popular ways to chat online.

The types of fonts you can use in mIRC is limited only by the types of fonts already installed in your Microsoft Windows, including any that you may have downloaded. Selecting and changing fonts in mIRC is easy and probably necessary if you'd like to properly display UTF-8 supported fonts and chat in languages not using the English alphabet.

  1. Definition

    • mIRC is an Internet Relay Chat system for Microsoft Windows. Setting mIRC apart from other IRC clients is an advanced scripting language that allows users to completely alter the appearance and behavior of mIRC.

Internet Relay Chat systems are a form of real-time Internet text messaging that allow group or one-to-one communication in discussion forums.

    Commonly Used Fonts

    • Fixedsys is the default font of mIRC; however, since mIRC uses the same fonts already in your computer, all the usual fonts (Times New Roman, Curior, Arial) are available for selection.

    Unicode Fonts

    • Many users may wish to display Unicode, and mIRC's default font, Fixedsys, is poor at displaying Unicode. According to the mIRC Scripting Network, you should find the following fonts acceptable for displaying Unicode: Lucida Sans Unicode, Times New Roman, Arial, Courier, Impact, Shruti and MS Gothic (See Reference).

    Non-English Fonts

    • As announced on the official mIRC Latest News service, developers added UTF-8 support on Feb. 17, 2006. UTF-8 is a font encoding system allowing you to display fonts with unusual, international characters. This is especially useful if you wish to chat in languages that don't use the English alphabet (See Reference).

    Changing Fonts

    • There are three ways to change your font setting in mIRC.

The first way to change your font is through the "font" option in the "system" menu: In the mIRC window, go to "view" in your system menu; select "font"; the "select font" dialog window should appear. Select the desired font in the left-hand side of the window and then click "OK". According to the official mIRC FAQ, the font setting you select here will become the default of the window you are in.

The second method is to use the Tools/Font menu: in the mIRC window, go to "tools;" select "font;" in the font dialog box select the font you wish to use and then click "OK." Again, these font settings will become the default of the window you are in.

The third way is to type "/font" (note the forward slash) inside mIRC, allowing you to change your font, font size and the default font for channels/chat windows.
