Keep your air ducts clean.

Cleaning air ducts is a relatively modern practice which has no general recommended approach. You should use caution when considering how and what to clean the ducts with. The EPA warns against using harsh chemicals to clean the ducts as this may worsen the indoor air quality. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Significance

    • The main reason to clean air ducts is ensure a high indoor air quality. Allergens such as dust and mold can hide in the ducts that warrant cleaning. Also, cleaning is necessary if you have rodents, or an insect infestation. Dirt and debris can clog the ducts and cause dirt to be released into the indoor air if not cleaned. The significance of using eco-friendly methods to this approach is so that fumes from the cleaner are not toxic as in standard cleaners, causing harmful chemicals to be released into the air, jeopardizing the occupants' health.

    Considerations

    • Cleaning air ducts is only recommended if there is a major issue that is causing harm to the persons in the space. It can be a costly, disrupting and time-intensive endeavor. If biocide chemicals or cleaning products are used, make sure that they are all nontoxic and hypoallergenic.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Mold is the issue to be most concerned about as it can lead to various health problems, most commonly lung infections. There are a few natural products that are safe to remove mold and mildew.

    Warning

    • According to the EPA, if the ducts have mold within them, the entire system must be cleaned including the air handling unit. If not thoroughly cleaned, the potential for recurrence is likely. Standard chemicals can heighten the health risks of the occupants. It is like trading one issue for another.

    Benefits

    • The best-case scenario is using cleaners that do not impinge on occupants' health, while leaving the space allergen-free. In taking the eco-friendly approach, another benefit is supporting the health of the earth by creating more of a demand for chemically inert products. That way the land, animals, water, air, and in turn, humans can be sustained in a healthy environment.
