The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard first introduced by SMART Technologies to the consumer market in 1991. Upon its release, the SMART board became the first interactive board to set the feature of incorporating touch control of computer applications as well as annotation over basic Microsoft Windows programs.
While the SMART Board has provided its users with a wide variety of innovations, it does display some problems, such as: instances where the cursor doesn’t move even if the finger is already moving on the board, the SMART Board pens do not function accordingly, the computer unable to detect the SMART Board and the presence of a steady red light on the board.
Among the probable causes of the SMART Board problems include the improper connection of the SMART Board to the computer or when the SMART Board was connected only after the computer was switched on. The SMART Board also fails to work when the hardware’s driver software has not yet been installed on the computer, thus causing the computer’s "Found New Hardware" wizard to fail from recognizing the board.
Before making any repair procedure, it is first important to check the connection between the computer and the SMART Board. Make sure the computer is turned off before connecting the corresponding cables; otherwise the board will not be recognized. The SMART Board ready light should also begin to flash from red to green; a steady green light indicated a fully functional board, while a steady red light says the board is only receiving power and is not yet functional.
If the SMART Board software is already installed and the board is still unrecognized by the computer, uninstall the said driver and repeat the installation process. Once installed, the red light at the board should turn green, meaning it has already been recognized by the computer and can function properly. It is also recommended to reset both the SMART Board and the computer to refresh both systems and allow proper functionality.
If the SMART Board pens do not work, it can be due to the wrong connection of the pen tray to the board and computer. There are two sockets at the back of the tray, and only one is plugged with a cable. The cable can be unplugged and placed on the empty socket, which may be the right place that would allow the pens to work.
