Kicker L5 Vs. L7

Kicker Audio is a leader among aftermarket sound systems for automobile manufacturers, and with the Kicker L5 and Kicker L7 subwoofers, the company has used innovation and creativity to design a market leader that provides cleaner, louder sound with a well-built structure for durability.

  1. History

    • Kicker Audio was established in 1980 and was the pioneer of the high-performance speaker enclosure market when the company developed its original, self-titled subwoofer. The start of the automobile audio market, the Kicker subwoofer was the first full-range speaker box used and mounted in automobiles.

    The Facts

    • The Kicker L5 model was introduced in 2006 to continue on the successful "L" line of products. Even though the product line was introduced several years ago, it is still considered comparable to current subwoofers on the market with its sound capabilities and quality build.

The L7 model was released in 2008, and much like the sister product released two years earlier, offers the quality and top-of-the-market sound expected from a Kicker brand product.

    Features

    • The Kicker features are what set the L5 and L7 apart from the rest of the market. Both versions feature the Kicker unique square-cone design that has a larger cone surface area, and allows for greater movement and saving space.

While all of that sounds nice, all you need to know is that it allows these little subwoofers to pack a serious punch, handling up to 1,200 watts without sound distortion.

The L7 has a slightly different design, with a one-piece, injection-molded cone that pushes more air through, making for a deeper, louder bass.

    Function

    • The L7 took the advancements from the L5 and ran with them. As with the L5, the L7's construction allows for better endurance and improved bass response, a pioneering move in the market because the vented square-cone design was the first of its kind. It was with the L7, though, that Kicker took that design and added a cast-aluminum basket.

The cast aluminum provides a sturdy base that affects accuracy at higher levels, and the UniPlate design construction virtually eliminates "bottoming out," or the sound speakers give when they are overextended.

This design gives the Kicker-brand subwoofers, the L7 more so than the L5, a sheer design, longer endurance and higher stress levels than that of other competitors on the market.

    Considerations

    • If having the most up-to-date and technologically advanced accessories for your car is your thing, the Kicker L7 released in 2008 provides the booming sound everyone wants with the comfort of knowing the quality build will hold up to even the highest stress levels. But, the more modern product comes with a more modern price: The 15-inch L7 will cost on average $300.

However if the latest toys are not what's important to you, the 2006 model L5 stands up to the market's latest entries with just as great a sounding subwoofer, while you'll pay a lower price for the older model. The same 15-inch design of the L5 will run around $200.
