Laptop Clock Problems
One of the most integral components of a laptop is the system clock. The clock not only tells the time, but it also indicates when the whole computer system should get an upgrade. With an outdated system clock, the laptop will become more susceptible to other, more serious problems.

Among common issues with laptop clocks is when the time-tellers stop and become delayed. The clock sometimes stops once the laptop is shut down and only resumes once it is turned on, with the time not updated to the present settings as it was supposed to be. There are also instances when the clock is unable to be updated even when manual changes were done on the BIOS/CMOS settings.
Causes
-
There are a number of causes to the occurrence of laptop clock problems. One problem can be because of a dying laptop CMOS battery. A stopping clock indicates that the CMOS battery is slowly losing its power and has to be replaced. This is a common problem with most laptops that are 3 years old and older.

Repair
-
The best way to fix a laptop clock that does not keep time properly is to have the CMOS battery replaced with a new, working unit. CMOS batteries cost somewhere between .20 and $3, and they can be replaced manually or with soldering, depending on the laptop brand. If the problem doesn't come from a broken battery, a good workaround would be to install a program that connects the computer system's clock with an online time server. Manual setting of the BIOS time and the operating system's time should be done afterward.
Caution
-
When replacing the CMOS battery, it is important to remove the broken unit properly from the motherboard to avoid grounding and static; a grounded laptop may cause electrocution and even kill the whole motherboard in the process. Placing a new battery should be done with care as well; improper placement may not register the battery on the system and the time would not be updated.
Effects
-
Leaving a broken laptop clock unattended can bring not only confusion on the part of the user, but also other update-related problems within the computer system. Intermittent stopping of the clock would also delay certain scheduled performances set on the computer, such as maintenance scanning and defrag activities. Some online activities are also affected since they rely on the computer's time settings.
