What Is Peripheral Anti Theft Protection?
As technology advances, so have the ways individuals protect their belongings. Many businesses and homes employ peripheral anti-theft devices such as surveillance cameras, alarm systems, security tags and vehicle-locking mechanisms. These are devices that send information to a central processing unit--a computer--to help control and prevent theft.

Cameras
-
A camera placed in plain sight can deter thieves. Many businesses have upgraded to this type of technology to help catch shoplifting and other criminal activity on the premises, and the presence of these devices can reduce employee theft. In addition, homeowners use video cameras, especially those capable of night vision, to capture images around their homes and ward off potential burglars.
Alarm Systems
-
Alarm systems have improved over the years, thanks to computer technology. Modern systems network homes and business to a central computer. The alarm can be disabled only by entering the right sequence of numbers into a keypad. If forcible entry is made, the alarm alerts a monitoring office that contacts local and other authorized personnel.

Security Tags
-
Many retail establishments use security tags to prevent shoplifting. These are plastic tags attached to merchandise that contain sensory devices inside them. Sometimes the tags are visible, but some are now smaller and hidden within the merchandise. The tags are removed or disabled at checkout, if properly paid for. If a person tries to leave without buying, the tags set off an alarm system's sensors.
Vehicle Security
-
Car-theft protection devices allow the victim to enter a code setting off an alarm if they are forced from their vehicle. Starter disablers can also be installed into the vehicle's starting system. These disablers prevent the vehicle from starting if the alarm system is activated or forcible entry is detected.
Disadvantages
-
Most of these devices require passwords to access, so it is important to choose a password that can be easily remembered but not easily compromised. Using birth dates or Social Security Numbers is not recommended, as they can easily be obtained. With security tags, experienced shoplifters have found ways to remove them using the right tools. This is also true of car alarm systems, as many thieves can easily disable them, so it is best to install them in a hidden area that is not as accessible.
