Publishing Companies for Teen Writers

Publishing Companies for Teen Writers thumbnail
For teens who want to publish, there are places who welcome your work.

Teen writers, or illustrators and photographers, can be eager to publish their work. As it happens, there are a number of publishing companies willing and dedicated to publishing work from teens.

  1. Magazines and books

    • Most publishing companies in the United States that accept teen submissions publish the work in magazines, and a few release "best-of" selections as books.
"Teen Ink," published by the Young Authors Foundation in the United Sates, distributes a national teen magazine monthly, along with a book series and website dedicated to writing, art and photos, all by teens age 13 to 19. The magazine, published since 1989, is distributed in classrooms by English, creative writing and journalism teachers across the U.S. It has also published six anthologies of stories and art that first appeared in the magazine.

"Cicada" is a magazine for teens and young adults that mixes stories and poems by adult authors with works submitted by their readership. Published by the Cricket Magazine Group, "Cicada" welcomes submissions from readers ages 14 to 23.

    Canadian outlets

    • Several publishers in Canada that are devoted to teen readers as well. "What If?" magazine is a bimonthly magazine that publishes stories, poems and art submitted by Canadian youth 19 years or younger. Its works include poetry, fiction, illustration, photography, editorials and reviews.

"Tiny Giant," is a magazine for and by youth, is one of many projects produced by The Students Commission of Canada.

    International writers

    • "Claremont Review" is another Canadian publication, but it attracts teen submissions from an international readership. The Review, published twice a year since 1991, publishes poems, short stories, short plays, graphic art, photograph and interviews. Most of the works the magazine has published come from Canada, but it has published submissions from the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. Submissions are welcome from contributors age 13 to 19.

    Web only

    • Most if not all publishers of teen writing post some of the work on the Internet. A few publish exclusively to the web. "Teen Hydro S. Magazine" is sent out as an email free to any who sign put for it. It is put out by the Hydro Writing Services, which also publishes an adult version of its emagazine and has forums to critique and advise writers. Teen Hydro accepts submissions from 12- to 19-year-olds of short stories, flash fiction, poetry, articles, book or film reviews, art and photos.

    Finding more

    • Writing-World.com, an extensive website for writers of all ages and genres, maintains a Resources for Young Writers page with links to these publishers and others. Teen Ink's website also lists other publishing companies and websites, and offers forum and discussion pages that allows writers to comment and critique the work of other teens.
