Tempur-Pedic vs. Novaform Mattress

Save

Sleep comfort has long been a concern of bedding manufacturers. The innerspring mattress has been the industry standard for years. It has been challenged in the past by waterbeds, high density foam mattresses and air beds. Fairly new to the market---since the 1980s---comes a newly engineered foam product which has taken the bedding world by storm. Tempur-Pedic was the first manufacturer to introduce this amazing product, and other companies have followed suit. NovaForm is manufactured by Sleep Innovations and calls its product Memory Foam.

History

  • In the 1960s NASA engineers invented a foam product designed to get soft as it warmed. They called it Temper. Originally created to provide long-term comfort in seat cushions for astronauts, it was never actually used. Twenty years later, NASA released the product to the marketplace and a Swedish manufacturer picked it up, refined the manufacturing process and developed the Tempur-Pedic mattress.

Composition

  • This innovative foam has a cellular structure which involves billions of cells that move independently, exchanging air through open windows as they reshape and conform to body weight, according to Tempur-Pedic. This visco elastic foam is an expensive process to manufacture. The mattress is made up of several layers of different types of foam. The top layer is soft and responds to body weight and temperature and allows you to sink into the mattress. The second and third layers absorb and distribute body weight and provide support while increasing airflow.

Features

  • Novaform boasts a 12-inch-thick mattress with a top layer of the temperature-sensitive material 3 inches thick. The other 9 inches of thickness provide the foundation. Conventional high density foam makes up this layer. Tempur-Pedic uses a multiple layer construction combining different base materials, semicustomizing the mattress for the consumer. Both NovaForm and Tempur-Pedic claim that their mattress allows you to sleep better because it absorbs weight and molds to the contours of your body. The foam returns to its original shape. Both mattresses are one-sided and never have to be turned. Tempur-Pedic touts its product is of higher density than Memory Foam and is engineered from edge to edge, thus needing no edge supports.

Benefits

  • Both companies give their product a 20-year warranty. Tempur-Pedic offers a "90 Night Tryout." Both companies have manufacturing facilities in the United States. The mattresses are suitable for conventional bed frames and also for platform beds, slatted frames and even the floor. For the sleeper, a particularly good characteristic of this innovative foam is how movement on one side of the mattress does not affect the other side. A Tempur-Pedic television ad illustrates this by showing a filled wine glass on one side with someone jumping up and down on the other.

Cost

  • Tempur-Pedic is about three times the price of NovaForm. As of 2009, The NovaForm Pure Comfort Queen size mattress is $550. That is for mattress only; box spring not included. It is available at Costco. Tempur-Pedic's 10-inch mattress "Deluxe Bed" sleep set is $2,700 at Macy's. Tempur-Pedic makes an 8-inch mattress sleep set for $1,700. Prices exclude any sales or rebates.
