Laser Welding Schools & Careers
Laser welding uses high temperature beams of light to melt or boil the welding surfaces. Laser light is a precise, flexible method of welding that can pass through fiber optic cables. Although this type of welding is typically done with robots or other equipment, people can study and learn how to operate the laser equipment.

Types
-
Laser welding is a specific technique that students learn while studying the broader topic of welding. Many colleges and universities offer degrees or certificates in welding as part of welding engineering or industrial technology programs. Career schools like Vatterott College also give diplomas in specialized welding programs. Additionally, trade schools or welding specialty schools are a good choice for people wishing to develop a career in laser welding.
Considerations
-
Welding apprenticeships are also an option, particularly for those wishing to begin their careers straight out of high school. According to the American Welding Society (AWS), welding apprenticeships allow participants to be apprentices for three to five years, earning money while they work toward the equivalent of an associate's degree. Contact the AWS for further information about apprenticeships in your area.

Time Frame
-
The length of time it will take to complete a course in welding depends on which program you take. The welding technology certificate from Texas State Technical College takes 12 months to complete. The University of Wisconsin-Madison gives three- and four-day courses for laser welding certificates, though these are designed for people who already have formal training. Degree programs at traditional colleges and universities usually last two years for an associate's degree or four years for a bachelor's degree.
Significance
-
Welders are responsible for fusing metal pieces together to form ships, automobiles, buildings, bridges and more. Professional welders may find themselves welding together a skyscraper, aircraft carrier or running their own business. Career prospects are immediate for trained welders because of the diverse job opportunities available. As of 2009, half of the nation's welders are nearing retirement, creating a high demand for skilled welders in the work force.
Potential
-
Qualified laser welders may wish to join the AWS and become a certified welding inspector (CWI). To achieve this title, you must first apply to take the CWI exam, either by downloading an application form from the AWS website or requesting a postal application. The assessment board will review your exam to ensure that you have the appropriate qualifications to take the exam. Qualifications are outlined on the AWS website under FAQs. The exam takes a full day to complete and results are available about four weeks later. Applicants have the option of taking a preparatory welding inspection seminar, run by the AWS, in the days leading up to the exam.
