Axis HT's primary function is to increase the amount of testosterone in the body by naturally increasing the testosterone produced by the body. This is different from anabolic steroids and pro hormones which increase testosterone by putting testosterone or related chemicals in the body, which ultimately results in a shut down of natural testosterone production in the body. Axis HT is intended to be used in cycles off use and non-use, with a length of 6-12 weeks recommended by the manufacturer. Axis HT is marketed mainly to bodybuilders with goals of increased muscle gains, although BSN has also advertised it as a virility aid.

How effective Axis HT and testosterone boosters are is a contentious issue, those who used pro hormones before they were banned tend to see new hormone products as relatively useless, while some advocates claim the lessened benefits are a welcome concession in return for reduced side effects. Though Axis HT is marketed as not having estrogen conversion, an increased level of testosterone may bring increased levels of estrogen as well.

In addition, Axis HT tends to have less severe side effects and health ramifications than steroids, which can often cause extreme drawbacks including natural testosterone shutdown. Although Axis HT is expensive (over $50 for a month's supply as of 2009) it pales in comparison to expensive black-market anabolic steroids. Axis HT is viewed as a healthier alternative to these illegal substances in boosting testosterone in the body.

With increased testosterone may come some unwanted side effects, and Axis HT is no different. While less severe than anabolic steroids, Axis HT may still cause similar side effects such as increased aggression, insomnia, mood swings, and acne. In addition, increased growth of body hair and some hair loss is certainly possible, though these side effects are rare if the product is used within recommended dosages. Axis HT also contains significant amounts of zinc and magnesium, so people sensitive to these minerals may experience side effects related to ingestion.

In addition, testosterone amplifiers can affect cholesterol, so it is beneficial to have a doctor monitor this as well.
Although it is not a steroid, Axis HT may also hamper natural testosterone production after discontinuing use, so it is important to monitor this effect in order to prevent more serious complications.
