The extreme pressure created by pressure washers is very useful for cleaning the siding of your house, your driveway or many other things. Pressure washers come in two forms: gas or electric. However, before going out and purchasing one of these, there are some things that you should know about each.
A pressure washer consists of a water pump that is attached to a motor. The motor creates water at such high pressure that it can be used to clean dirt and mold from the sides of buildings or from a concrete driveway. Pressure washers use up to 50 percent more pressure than your typical garden hose. They also use considerably less water.
For extreme high pressure jobs, the gas pressure washer is going to be the best fit. A gas pressure washer can reach up to 4,000 psi. Since they do not need an outlet for energy, gas pressure washers are far more portable than electric. There is an additional cost when purchasing a gas pressure washer because fuel must be bought. The biggest drawback of a gas pressure washer is that it emits exhaust fumes and can only be used in well ventilated areas.
An electric pressure washer is generally used for light duty work because it does not create as much pressure as a gas pressure washer. Electric is more light weight and is quieter than the gas. The biggest drawback to an electric pressure washer is that it needs to be plugged into an outlet. Sometimes the use of an extension cord is needed and the wires can be very troublesome.
One alternative to using a pressure washer is to do the job by hand. This may involve scrubbing on your hands and knees and can take an extremely long time. However, by doing the job by hand you are much closer to the project and you reduce the risk of mistakes. Using a hose can also be beneficial, but a typical garden hose can only reach 40 psi of pressure. For certain low maintenance jobs, a steam cleaner can work.
When deciding which kind of pressure washer you need, first you must decide what kind of job you require the pressure washer for. For high maintenance jobs, a gas pressure washer is the best fit. For jobs indoors an electric pressure washer would be better due to the fact that it does not release hazardous fumes. If the job requires a lot of moving around, then a gas pressure washer would be better because it is more portable then an electric.
