Liposuction for Health Reasons

Liposuction doesn't have to be a vanity surgery.

Liposuction is no longer being considered a procedure to improve one's appearance. Recent studies and clinical trials have concluded that liposuction does in fact have health benefits associated with it. Now not only can you look good, you can feel great, too.

  1. Definition

    • Liposuction is the removal of excess fat underneath the skin. The procedure is performed by a certified plastic surgeon by using a hollow rod that breaks up the fat deposits and removes the fat via a vacuum pump. One of the main functions of liposuction is for body contouring and weight loss. There are many techniques to perform liposuction using general anesthesia, heavy sedation or local anesthesia.

    Features

    • There are many areas of the body one can choose to have the liposuction procedure. Body procedures include abdomen, thighs, breast (both men and women), arms, back, buttocks, face, neck, legs and ankles. These procedures attribute to the body contouring based on the patient's desires.

    Benefits

    • Since liposuction by definition is the removal of excess fat, it has been found to have health benefits. With the removal of fat, patients have decreased their weight and also decreased their body mass index. Losing excess fat and lowering the body mass index has a healthy effect on one's general health. Liposuction may help with lowering blood pressure, lowering insulin levels, improving joint and back aches and improving risks of stroke and heart disease.

    Risks

    • As with any surgery, there are risks associated. Although liposuction does have health benefits, not everyone is qualified to receive a liposuction. If you have significant medical conditions, liposuction many not be an option for you. Other issues such as smoking, alcohol use, blood pressure, diabetes and allergies must be under control before surgery can be done. Liposuction is a potentially life threatening procedure. With liposuction, the potential for bleeding and blood clots, infection, adverse reactions to medications, shock, to name a few, is present as with any other surgery performed.

    Cost

    • Liposuction can be rather expensive. There is no fixed fee for a liposuction as the price is usually determined by the number of body procedures performed and can add up quickly. So, not only do you have to consider the health benefits of liposuction, you must also determine if the benefit outweighs the cost.
