Bupropion for Weight Loss

Bupropion, also known under its brand name Wellbutrin, is most often used as an antidepressant and smoking cessation drug. However, a recent study conducted by Dr. Kishore Gadde of Duke University, published in the September issue of Obesity Research, found that women who consumed 1,600 calories a day while taking bupropion lost significantly more weight than those not taking this medication while following the same diet. Those who participated in this obesity study were not depressed and exactly how bupropion leads to increased weight loss is unknown. This is a prescription medication.
