Common Sirius Starmate Problems

Common Sirius Starmate Problems thumbnail
Sirus Satellite radios provide drivers with a diverse set of musical entertainment.

The Starmate is one of the most affordable and widely used products in the Sirius Satellite Radio line. It allows users to listen to various radio channels and is used most often while driving. While the Starmate does provide a versatile platform for listening to satellite radio, it is also capable of encountering certain issues which require the owner's attention. Solving these issues will help improve the listening quality of satellite radio.

  1. Static

    • While receiving static signal is normal for almost all radio networks, in certain situations the Sirius Starmate is prone to having continuous static signal issues. There have been user complaints that certain channels may provide clear broadcasting on a particular route or territory, but beyond that static arises. While this is generally accepted for non-satellite broadcasts, this should not be the case for a satellite radio service, and indicates a problem.

    Interference

    • Another problem which is sometimes encountered with the Sirius Starmate happens when owners pass through tunnels, parking garages, or under bridges. When passing by these areas, as well as other covered places, it is not uncommon that your streaming will be interrupted as there is a poor signal. You can, however, get back to normal listening once you get over these obstructions which block signal reception.

    Hardware Issues

    • There are certain instances when the Starmate fails to receive broadcast signals due to malfunctioning cords, especially during the colder seasons. This is brought about by thermal defects with the cord used in the antenna. Another problem that continues to exist is when the radio begins to replay the current tune and/or is stuck at the same channel even after attempts to change it. This is also due to a receiver defect, and can only be fixed by means of replacement.

    Setup Issues

    • Unlike other Sirius satellite radio products, the Starmate is quite difficult to setup into the vehicle. While there are instructions as to how should be the radio installed, it will take time for an amateur to make the radio work flawlessly. Professional installment costs $75 (as of November 2009), as the radio's antenna has to be connected in some area of the vehicle only technicians can detect.

    Overall Performance

    • Aside from the aforementioned issues, there are very few consumer complaints of major problems encountered with the Sirius Starmate. Users are then able to enjoy the performance of the said radio equipment, and as long as they avoid the factors that increase the risk of interruptions and static interferences, receiving radio broadcasts remain of high quality and are enjoyable. Additionally, listeners benefit from the fact that the number of stations available from Sirius are greater when compared with other satellite radio providers.
