Circular saws are also known as skill saws and are available from nearly every manufacturer of power tools. Prices as of November 2009 range from $65 to $220 based on quality, capacity and blade size. How frequently you plan on using your saw can help determine which one to choose. The most common circular saw uses a 7 1/4-inch blade but they can also be found with blades as small as 6 1/2 inches and as large as 10 1/2 inches. They are powered electrically by cord or by battery.

Radial arm saws are available from a variety of manufacturers and the prices generally range from $550 to $1,100. These prices are also based on quality, capacity, and blade size. Blades for a radial arm saw are 8, 10, and 12 inches. The 10-inch blade is the most common, while the 12-inch blade is usually found in industrial settings such as wood shops and mills. Radial arm saws used for industrial purposes can cost as much as $2,500 and come with a stand or table.

Similarities of circular saws and radial arm saws include their ability to cut a variety of materials and the type of cuts they are capable of making. Both can be used to make straight or cross cuts, miter and bevel cuts. They can also be used to cut different material lengthwise, known as ripping. The Power Tool Buying Guide suggests the proper blade be used to make these various cuts. Different blades are available for cutting framing lumber, plywood and trim stock. Both saws are also capable of cutting light gauge metal and laminates.

    Differences

Differences between the two saws, aside from the obvious visual difference, should be considered before making your decision. Adequate space is required to set up a radial arm saw. For the most part, radial arm saws should remain stationary, which explains why they are so popular in wood shops and mills. Circular saws are much more portable due to their size and weight and are easily carried to different areas of your project. It is not uncommon to carry a circular saw up an extension ladder to make a necessary cut. That is definitely not the case with a radial arm saw. Radial arm saws are much more effective when a large number of similar cuts are needed.

    Safey guidelines

    • Making yourself aware of all safety guidelines before operating any power tool can never be emphasized enough. In the case of circular and radial arm saws, Consumer Reports points out that ear and eye protection should always be worn when operating any power saw.
Before changing a blade, thoroughly read the instruction manual that is provided with your saw. Improperly installing a blade can lead to inaccurate cuts and, more importantly, serious injuries. If installed incorrectly, the blade can become detached from the saw which can result in a dangerous situation. Never purchase a used saw that is not equipped with both an electric brake and a blade guard. It is always a good idea to take a lesson from a professional before taking on your first project.
