Manitoba Rental Housing is one such option, providing support to families, children, disabled and/or low-income persons, and matching families to properties as deemed appropriate. 1. History

    • Manitoba Housing is a public housing service that rents affordable housing to Manitobans. The agency is managed by Minister Gord Mackintosh and Manitoba's Minister Family Services and Housing.

The agency rents, apartments, houses, townhouses and duplexes. Though the housing authority does not usually provide emergency housing, it does in evacuation measures. In an emergency, Manitoba Housing claims to reunite families, provide food, clothing and temporary lodging.

    • Manitoba Housing offers non-governmental programs and services to access what one needs. Social service programs include child protection programs, violence prevention, family conciliation services, disabled programs, children's programs and employment programs. They provide affordable housing to low- to moderate-income Manitobans.

Age, gender and number of household determine the property allotted. One must be 18 years of age or older, independent, have a gross family income not exceeding the "Housing Income Limit Guidelines," have a good rental history and references.

    • Regions to apply in-person are located in Winnipeg, Central, Interlake, Parkland, Westman, Eastman and Northern. One can also get the application from the website (www.gov.mb.ca) or have it mailed. They offer bilingual services in English and French.

Your rent payment may be lowered if your income has decreased. One can report an income reduction as low as $40 to the Manitoba Housing Authority. The tenancy is on a month-to-month basis; one month's notice is needed before moving out.

    Considerations

    • Housing is provided once household number, genders and special accommodations are determined: parent and a child, two bedroom; parent with a son and a daughter, three bedroom; parent with a son and a son 18 years of age, three bedroom.

Manitoba Housing cannot hold a place of residence longer than three days.

The "Housing Income Limits" link has list of communities to choose from on its website as well as the "Senior 55+ Housing Accommodations" link that has list of senior residences. You can make an appointment with Manitoba Housing to see the potential place of residence.

    Keys and Rent

    • Keys are given once the tenancy agreement is signed and the first month's rent is paid. Your rent is based off your income: studio apartment, 25 percent of your total gross income; one or more bedrooms, 27 percent of your total gross income.

Rent is a fixed rate. But cost of utilities may vary. Rent payment is reviewed every year, after the rent calculation; rent adjustments may be made, if needed.
