MSM for Joint Pain

MSM for Joint Pain thumbnail
MSM is an essential component in bone.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate as much as 30 percent of the United States population reported joint pain symptoms within a 30 day period in 2006. As a result, many have turned to natural supplements as a remedy for pain symptoms. MSM is a supplement drug used to support bone structures and alleviate discomfort.

  1. MSM

    • MSM---methlysulfonylmethane---is a type of biological sulfur found in plants and animals. The human body uses it to manufacture a number of essential chemicals like hormones, antibodies and enzymes. MSM is also a vital component in the making of connective tissues throughout the body. Natural sources of sulfur can be obtained from vegetables, milk, fruits and coffee; however, much of the MSM in the body is destroyed by modern-day food processing methods. Because of its role in manufacturing connective tissues, MSM is promoted as a joint pain relief remedy.

    Joint Pain

    • Joint pain problems can develop from past injuries or performing repetitive motions, or they can be related to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Deteriorating bone structures can result from metabolism problems where needed nutrients are missing in the diet. Inflammation and loss of cartilage materials can also play a part in a joint's deterioration process. Under these circumstances, continued use of the joint may further aggravate pain symptoms and bone deterioration. As MSM is an essential material within connective tissues, it's availability during bone metabolism processes is needed for healthy bone maintenance and repair.

    Function

    • Bone metabolism processes require a certain mix of materials to be present in order to function normally. MSM works to enhance the synthesis of materials like glucosamine and chondroitin within metabolism processes. Collagen is another material essential in the formation of bone and cartilage structures. MSM materials provide a needed base ingredient for the proteins used in the making of collagen. The overall effects of MSM on bone metabolism can work to reduce inflammation, reduce joint pain and further enhance bone metabolism efficiency.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects associated with MSM include nausea, headache and diarrhea. Women who are pregnant or nursing are advised to avoid MSM as it is unknown whether its effects are harmful to developing fetuses. Allergic reactions are possible with any drug or supplement medication. Individuals who experience shortness of breath, hives or a rash should discontinue taking MSM. In some cases, individuals may experience problems sleeping, constipation or upset stomach. Symptoms may subside with time; however, if they persist medical attention may be warranted.

    Considerations

    • While there are numerous claims as to the benefits of MSM to treat joint pain, there is no conclusive evidence to support these claims. Unlike pharmaceutical medications, supplement drugs do not receive the financial backing needed to conduct extensive research trials. As supplements are derived from natural materials, they cannot be patented under any one commercial company so there's little to no incentive for pharmaceutical companies to research their effects. Pharmaceutical drugs are strictly regulated to ensure safety and quality standards, whereas supplement drugs are not. As a result, MSM product quality can vary from brand to brand.
