Allergic reactions are possible with any drug or supplement medication. Individuals who experience shortness of breath, hives or a rash should discontinue taking MSM. In some cases, individuals may experience problems sleeping, constipation or upset stomach. Symptoms may subside with time; however, if they persist medical attention may be warranted.

While there are numerous claims as to the benefits of MSM to treat joint pain, there is no conclusive evidence to support these claims. Unlike pharmaceutical medications, supplement drugs do not receive the financial backing needed to conduct extensive research trials. As supplements are derived from natural materials, they cannot be patented under any one commercial company so there's little to no incentive for pharmaceutical companies to research their effects. Pharmaceutical drugs are strictly regulated to ensure safety and quality standards, whereas supplement drugs are not. As a result, MSM product quality can vary from brand to brand.
