The earliest European sculpture is estimated to be 35,000 years old and is in the shape of the female form. From famous works like the "Discus Thrower" to "Venus de Milo," sculpture captured the artistic beauty of the human body. Today, we can achieve with our own bodies what Michelangelo achieved with the "Statue of David"--a toned and healthy work of human art.

  1. What Is Body Sculpting?

    • Body sculpting isn't body building--you're not trying to gain muscle mass, you're contouring muscles for your ideal body shape.

Body sculpting isn't cosmetic surgery--you're not using liposuction to remove body fat. You're using exercise techniques to tone specific areas of the body.

Body sculpting reshapes your body through diet and exercise combined with strength/interval training. With body sculpting, there's no "World Championship" or "cut and suck." There's just you and your desire to sculpt the best possible you.

    How Is It Performed?

    • There are four steps to achieve maximum body sculpting results.

First is diet. You need a well-balanced, nutritious diet for optimal health. Body sculpting exercises are targeted, so you need to keep your muscle tissues strong. Eat plenty of lean proteins and antioxidant-rich foods such as baked chicken, blueberries, broccoli, salmon, strawberries, spinach and tuna.

Specific exercises for specific muscles and muscle groups. For example, if you want to sculpt your abs, you do a certain repetition and style of crunches and situps.

Strength training comes into play. Using lighter weights and more repetitions will help define sleek muscles. Using heavier weights with fewer repetitions will help create stronger muscles.

Finally, you can add interval training to most any cardiovascular exercise you enjoy. For example, if you run, interval training involves the "sprint and slow" stage. During your regular run, simply speed up your pace to a sprint for 2 to 3 minutes, and then walk slowly for 2 to 3 minutes.

    Best Body Sculpting Moves

    • Which exercise you choose depends on which area of the body you are trying to tone and sculpt. There are specific exercises geared toward arms, flatter belly, breasts, waist line, hips, thighs and buttocks.

    Benefits

    • Body sculpting provides more than just a sexy, tone physic. The diet and exercises that go with body sculpting also increase metabolism to help you burn more calories and fat, help you feel more energetic, increase your body's overall strength to fight certain diseases and strengthen your bones.

Need to Know Before You Start

    • Prepare yourself for the sore muscle stage when you begin body sculpting. Because you are focusing on a certain muscle or group of muscles, you are working them harder, and like they say..."no pain, no gain." Also be sure to consult with a doctor before starting any diet or exercise program.
