A room attendant maintains guest rooms.

A room attendant, also referred to as a housekeeper or maid, works in a hotel or facility that provides accommodations for overnight guests. Room attendants maintain and inspect guest rooms, providing a clean and secure environment for guests and the facility.

  1. Qualifications

    • Most facilities have no requirements for education but require an applicant be at least 18 years of age. Additional qualifications include the ability to read, write and speak English. Physical capability to lift, push or pull at least 20 pounds is also required.

Because this occupation requires access to guests' personal belongings, most employers require applicants to pass a criminal and drug background check.

    Responsibilities

    • Contributing to the facility's high standards for guest services, overall responsibilities consist of cleaning and maintaining guest rooms. This includes cleaning all areas by sanitizing, dusting and vacuuming. Replenishing guest room supplies such as restroom, food and beverages offered by the facility is required.

Extended-stay facilities may require more detailed cleaning of guest rooms. When a guest leaves an extended-stay facility, rooms may require carpet shampooing and more aggressive dusting, vacuuming and sanitizing.

Most guests for all overnight accommodation facilities are asked to complete a survey regarding their overall satisfaction of accommodations during their stay, which includes room attendants' quality of service.

    Additional Responsibilities

    • Additional responsibilities may include cleaning and sanitizing common areas of the facility. Along with maintaining guest rooms and common areas, room attendants inspect rooms to ensure guests are following the facility's policies. Inspecting for property damage and other prohibited activities ensures overall satisfaction of all guests in addition to protecting the property. Prohibited activities and damages are reported to a supervisor.

    Average Salaries

    • As of 2008, full-time travel accommodation cleaning occupation salaries average $16,790 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and in 2009, Indeed.com reports average salaries of $19,000 per year.

    Job Outlook

    • Employment for cleaning-related occupations, including room attendants, is expected to increase 16 percent through 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2008-2009 occupational outlook. Job opportunities result from many workers leaving this industry because of relatively low salaries and from most of these occupations offering only part-time employment.
