Side Effects of Hydrochloride

The salt hydrochloride is formed when hydrochloric acid is mixed with organic substances known as amines. Your body naturally produces some amines, the most common known group of amines being amino acids. Application of different amine groups can produce medicines that target specific disorders, bringing relief from certain ailments. Even then, when used as an ingredient in medication, hydrochloride is still likely to cause some adverse effects.

  1. Medications Containing Hydrochloride

    • Widely used medications containing hydrochloride include Arpicolin Procyclidine Hydrochloride, Tramadol Hydrochloride, and Adipex-P. Procyclidine Hydrochloride treats antipsychotic drug-induced pseudoparkinson symptoms often associated with schizophrenia. Tramadol is a moderate-to-severe painkiller, and Adipex-P is an appetite suppressant. All these medications have similar neurological and gastrointestinal side effects and can affect the heart and eyes.

    Neurological Side Effects

    • Patients taking prescribed doses often report dizziness and nervousness due to how these high-powered medications directly affect the brain. Hydrochloride drug use can cause headaches, mood changes, hallucinations, memory loss and confusion. The occurrence of seizures is the reason patients with uncontrolled epilepsy should not use it. Long-term use can lead to dependence on the drug. Take the proper dosage at all times. After long-term use, there may be withdrawal symptoms, such as nervousness, agitation, shakiness or insomnia.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Some rather unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects are associated with these medications. These include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting and constipation. Instances of urinary retention subsided with lower dosages of the medication. Severe vomiting could be a serious complication; consult your physician immediately.

    Changes in Vision

    • Vision changes are a serious side effect of taking this medication. Blurred vision can be an indication that the dosage may be too high for the individual. For safety reasons, if you notice any changes in your vision, contact your physician immediately.

    Effects on the Heart

    • Some patients who take these medications report noticeable heart issues. Any changes in your heart rhythms or abnormal heartbeats should be reported immediately. Often, lowering the dosage or introducing a second medication to control the symptoms is all that is needed. While hydrochloride-containing medications can be beneficial to most patients, the common side effects can be hazardous and is the reason for careful monitoring by medical professionals.

    General Hydrochloride Side Effects

    • Drowsiness may occur when taking these medications, so exercise extreme caution and avoid driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcohol, which combines with some of these medications to contribute to liver damage. Those who are pregnant or have a history of kidney problems or uncontrolled epilepsy should check with their primary-care physician before taking these medications.
